feather plucking solution

Avian Benadryl Solution

Recently I had to take Kiwi back to the vet. He was plucking and irritable. I had a gram stain performed to be sure there was nothing worst going on but I knew it was more likely to be caused by the stress of life (a move to a new home and a two-year-old running around) or hormone season. After a careful check-up from Dr. Lois Davis, DVM she also suggested it might be due to itchy dry skin. She offered a simple low-cost remedy: Mix 1/2 tsp children's Benadryl into 8 oz of water then give it to your bird as their sole water source.
Since giving Benadryl water to Kiwi, I have noticed he is more relaxed. This could be because his skin is not as agitated or it could be because the Benadryl is calming him down. Most likely, it is a combination of the two.

Avian Benadryl Solution

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp Diphenhydramine HCl 12.5mg/5mL (This is usually the children's liquid Benadryl)
  • 8 oz water

Directions

Mix well and serve to the bird as the sole water source.

Benefits of giving Benadryl to your parrot

This solution is a great remedy for parrots that pluck their feathers because of stress or dry skin. However, this is not a long term solution and should not be followed for more than 1 month unless instructed by an avian vet.
